Injection Pump Rebuild

Since there isn't a tech page on the new site, I'll post it here. I found that both injection pumps on my 6bta-330M3 engines leaked a little bit of oil from the small freeze plugs  so I decided to have them rebuilt as a winter project.

I used Advanced Marine Diesel for the job. It took a few weeks to have an injection shop to do the job. The pumps were reinstalled in early December. Then came the rain, Then, I found I had a 6 x 6 blue tarp wrapped around my prop. Then, I found the shifter mechanism on the starboard Zf220A transmission was locked up and need it's own maintenance.

I lost several weeks with these unexpected problems but everything is back together now. Bob and I took it out for a test run on the 13th. The engines sound much quieted and are smoother at all rpms. Fully loaded the engines made 2920 rpm and 30.6 kts. 20 psi of boost. Now, I can hope for better fuel economy.

If you have ZF200A transmissions, the shift mechanism is a maintenance item. If shifting isn't smooth, you might need to take it apart and grease the parts. I used water proof trailer bearing grease. Removing the drift pins and the circlip for is a challenge. You'll need a good set of tools to do the job

Good job Bill! I can finally get in this site... Update on my freshwater flush, still working and getting used to the 3 minutes of fresh water per engine when I return. Can't say I see a difference until I open them up and inspect the Aftercooler and Heat exchanger, but the peace of mind is nice. 

The new Raymarine CP 570 Sounder booster is working well and although it doesn't replace the beam width of my B265LH ducer, it adds better definition and added 1 KW so now it's 2kw. Pretty cool and I can see DSL now.

CP570 Transducer Description:

Hi Terry.  Thanks for watching!   

 

I must apologize for an error in my statement in the live broadcast (this is Jim responding.)  I thought TJ had CP570 onboard but in fact he does not.   He is running his B275LHW transducer connected to an RVM-1600 RealVision MAX sonar module, networked to the rest of his Axiom 2 Pro displays.  The RVM-1600 module has connections for a RealVison 3D transducer (which TJ does not have) and an Airmar 1kW transducer (hosting the B275HW.)

 

It is technically possible to connect a 1kW transducer to the CP570.  There are pluses and minuses to it.   The minus is that the CP570 supports up to 2kW transducers.  With a 1kW attached, you are paying for more power output capability than you can use.  The CP570, through transducer ID, sees that the transducer is rated for 1kW and adjusts itself accordingly so it doesn't damage the transducer with too much power.  

 

The benefit the CP570 brings with any Airmar CHIRP transducer is its dual-channel architecture.     The CP570 module actually has dual sonars internally.  There is a dedicated transceiver, input and output channel for frequency 1, and another independent transceiver, input and output channel for frequency 2.  Each channel can run at full-speed, maximum ping rate, all the time, with direct access to its own transceiver. Nothing is shared between the 2 frequencies.

 

Axiom Pro 2 RVM Sonar Description:

By comparison, the RVM-1600, CP470 and Axiom 2 Pro RVM's built-in 1kW sonar transceivers are constructed with single-channel architecture.  Instead of having dedicated components for each frequency, the transceiver, input channel and output channel are shared between frequencies 1 and 2.  If you are using any individual channel, it can run at full speed, full ping rate.  If you are using both frequencies simultaneously, it must share those components, alternating pings between frequency 1 and frequency 2.  The makes the update rate slower, by comparison.  In some scenarios, especially in very deep water this can make the on-screen update rate appear very slow if you need to watch both frequencies.  (In the case of the RVM-1600 and Axiom 2 Pro RVM, those units also support RealVision 3D, which has its own separate transceiver, input and output channel.)

 

Ideally, the ultimate solution is a 2kW transducer used with a CP570 because you get a power-matched setup with all the benefits of dual-channel design.  The challenge is this setup can be expensive, and the 2kW transducers can be too large for some boats to accommodate.  

 

I hope this explains it better, and apologies again for mis-identifying his system components.

On your Axiom Pro, the RealVision sonar system is separate from the 1kW system.  Within the 1kW system though, there is a shared channel.  In your case its shared between the TM265's Low and High band frequencies.  If you are running them both simultaneously, this will slow down the update rate as it has to alternate pings between each frequency.

It is interesting...  I had wondered about that, but at least i have the new dedicated channels... I will end up getting a new transducer, a 2KW one to match and one with a wider cone angle. Meanwhile, I am enjoying maybe a cleaner (less noise so more powerful?) signal...only way to tell is if it can put us on fish and we can catch... so far so good.

@jefftom the proof will be seen when you do the next maintenance. bob flushed his engines every time he ran them. they were clean as new when he pulled them. Looks like you did a nice upgrade in transducers. good job.
